March 30 – April 28, 2018

Art Village Gallery's MLK 50th Exhibition, Beyond the Balcony,

Answers the Call: "Where Do We Go from Here?"

MEMPHIS, TN – March 26, 2018 | What happens when civil rights and art collide?  Art Village Gallery's ground-breaking Beyond the Balcony MLK50 tribute exhibition answers the call--"Where do we go from here?" this Friday, March 30, from 6:30-8:30, at 410 S. Main Street in the South Main Arts District.

While the world looks on as the city of Memphis commemorates the 50th anniversary of the assassination of civil rights icon, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Art Village Gallery brings its' ground-breaking Beyond the Balcony exhibition to spark dialogue about how we can live up to Dr. King's legacy, fifty years later.

Acknowledging the power of art to ignite social change and capture social and political movements, Sheila Urévbu, Art Village Gallery's director and curator, believes the MLK50 commemoration presents a clean canvas to help Memphis decide where it goes from here.

"We've brought together a collective voice of extremely talented artists to usher the community into candid conversation about the City’s progress while visually illustrating its promise and what it looks like to live 'Beyond the Balcony,’ says Urévbu.

Featured artists from across the globe include: Nonye Ikegwuoha, Sydney James, Kerream Jones, Jin Powell, Rashaun Rucker, Taylonn Sawyer, and Ephraim Urévbu.

Art Village Gallery will also host an intimate post-exhibition Dinner & Dialogue event on Tuesday, April 3rd from 7-9pm. Guests will enjoy a five-course meal prepared by a private chef and engage in a curated discussion about the art and the city-wide theme, led by Ericka DeBruce, Sedgwick Claims Management Services, Inc's Vice President of Engagement, Inclusion and Social Responsibility.
