Connecting Memphis to Colombian Culture
South Main Art Gallery Brings Magical Colombian Exhibition during Memphis in May
Memphis, TN: Art Village Gallery, whose mission is to promote diversity through art, announced that it will pay tribute to Memphis in May's honored country, Colombia, by exhibiting the latest artwork of award-winning Colombian artist, Jorge Yances. The opening cocktail reception will be held at the gallery on Friday, May 5th from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.
“Colombian art has incredible influences”, says curator and gallery owner Sheila Urevbu. Yances’ artwork is a fusion of reality and fantasy, two essential elements that place him squarely in the Magical Realism movement. “Our goal is to connect the community with culturally significant exhibitions and Memphis in May’s salute to Colombia was the perfect tie in.”
Jorge Yances’ oil and mixed media on canvas series is titled, Cartagena: Memorias y Conexiones (Cartagena: Memories and Connections) and it explores the beauty of his native land and leads viewers across the threshold of consciousness within the larger immigrant experience. Demonstrating the beauty of Realismo Mágico (Magic Realism), Yances has the unique ability to blend physical reality with what some people call fantasy, and the result is a vision of worlds that runs parallel to this one.
